Golden milk (or the turmeric latte) isn’t a new idea. While they’re having a moment in the spotlight right now, they’re not a modern recipe!
Surprisingly, golden milk goes back centuries as a traditional ayurvedic recipe! It was originally created to support the body in a number of different ways. Known for strengthening our vitality, or Ojas (in Sanskrit), it has also been used as an anti-inflammatory because of the turmeric. In addition to these benefits, it’s been used to boost the immune system and to help with sleep – traditionally being served before bed. However, it’s easy to incorporate golden milk or turmeric lattes anytime of the day.
If you typically drink coffee in the mornings, turmeric lattes can be a great substitute! They’re warming, creamy and nourishing, providing amazing anti-inflammatory properties along with benefits of the other herbs and spices used in the drink. By adding a little bit of coconut oil and collagen, you amp up the nutritional value of the beverage and make it a well-rounded snack.
It’s important to add a fat into your golden milk because it helps with absorption of the curcumin in the turmeric. This is also why most recipes add a pinch of black pepper – for better absorption. Typical go-to’s for fat include coconut oil, coconut milk, cashew milk (or ground cashews) or even hemp seed milk (or ground hemp seeds). However, coconut oil can be particularly beneficial is it contains a variety of medium-chain triglycerides which are immediately used for energy instead of being stored for fat.
I like my turmeric latte with delicious warming spices including ginger and cinnamon, so this recipe is a fantastic and comforting option on a cold day. As the weather turns and snow is on the horizon, I see myself cuddling up on the couch with a warm turmeric latte in the evenings.
